Environmental Impact Assessment is a planning process that aims to predict, evaluate and mitigate the impact on the environment of a proposed project, program or policy prior to its commencement, and to approve only environmentally acceptable undertakings. EIA is hence a mechanism for avoiding or mediating some of the potential costs of development.
This Training Course on Environmental Impact Assessment and Environmental Audit (EIA / EA) offered by Phoenix Center for Policy, Research and Training aims to help participants develop a comprehensive and critical understanding of the theory and practice of EIA in the world including East African countries. The course examines EIA in general and in specific jurisdictions. It also examines the technical and policy issues involved in the production and the appraisal of environmental impact assessments.
This Training Course on Environmental Impact Assessment and Environmental Audit (EIA / EA) offered by Phoenix Center for Policy, Research and Training will introduce participants to the theory and practice of environmental impact assessment (EIA), the systematic identification and evaluation of the potential effects on the physical, biological, cultural, and socioeconomic components of the environment of proposed actions—projects, plans, programs, legislation. The objective of EIA is to encourage consideration of the environment in the planning and decision-making process to arrive at actions that avoid or minimize adverse impacts on the environment.
EIA is now mandated by legislation in over 100 countries around the world. With encouragement from ISO 14000, the practice of EIA is expanding into the corporate world to evaluate the environmental aspects of business operations. This course will explore the need for environmental impact assessments, the different types of assessments, and the regulatory and technical requirements of preparing an assessment.

This learning process will help us generate a new appreciation for the complex world in which we live.
Course Objectives
Upon the successful completion of this Training Course on Environmental Impact Assessment and Environmental Audit (EIA / EA), participants will be able to:
- Understand the EIA process as it is used for research, planning, project or program evaluation, monitoring, and regulatory enforcement.
- Understand the legal, economic, social, administrative and technical process of preparing and/or evaluating environmental impact documents.
- Critically review a world including East African countries environmental impact statements or comparable document for completeness and adequacy.
- Prepare environmental documents through administrative and legal requirements and standards of professional practice.
- Fully participate in interdisciplinary environmental report preparation teams.
- Analyze proposed development project plans for possible environmental effects and prepare appropriate initial studies.
- Utilize EIA documents for policy development, project planning or for legal or political action planning.
- Use EIA as a decision-making tool in project planning and management.
- Understand the strategic and organizational context of environmental management in
- different settings.
- Articulate, justify and apply specific policy and legal framework for EIA on environmental issues.
- Monitor, evaluate and audit projects/ programmes and produce an audit report.
- Deliver practical outcomes that contribute positively to environmental performance.
- Interpret correctly the audit requirements of Environmental Management Systems, Standards and audit procedures.
Training Methodology
The course is designed to be highly interactive, challenging and stimulating. It will be an instructor led training and will be delivered using a blended learning approach comprising of presentations, discussions, guided sessions of practical exercise, case study review, web-based tutorials, group work, exploration of relevant issues collaborative strength training, performance measurement, and workshops of participants’ displays, all of which adhere to the highest standards of training. The training technique is built on learning by doing, with training facilitators using a learner-centered approach to engage participants and provide tasks that allow them to apply what they’ve learned. Experiential knowledge is also given equal importance within the format of training.
The training will also include a site visit and preparation of an Environmental Impact Assessment / Environmental Audit Report based on the site visit. Participants will make two 15-minutes presentations (both individual and group presentations) on assigned topics. Every presentation will be assessed by the instructor in accordance with the grading scheme. In case of group presentation, the number of points is divided among the participants prepared presentation proportionally. Our facilitators are seasoned industry professionals with years of expertise in their chosen fields. All facilitation and course materials will be offered in English.

Requirements
- Participants should be reasonably proficient in English.
- Participants must possess an Undergraduate Degree from a recognized university in Project Management, Geography, Engineering, Architecture, Building Technology, Construction Management, Real Estate Management, Environmental Science, Environmental Health or any related field.
- Applicants must live up to Phoenix Center for Policy, Research and Training admission criteria.

Cancellation Policy
- Payment for all courses includes a registration fee, which is non-refundable, and equals 15% of the total sum of the course fee.
- Participants may cancel attendance 14 days or more prior to the training commencement date.
- No refunds will be made 14 days or less before the training commencement date. However, participants who are unable to attend may opt to attend a similar training course at a later date or send a substitute participant provided the participation criteria have been met.
