Spatial Epidemiology and GIS for Disease Mapping Training Course

Spatial Epidemiology and GIS for Disease Mapping Training Course

Course Overview

This technical training course provides researchers, epidemiologists, and public health professionals with advanced skills in geographic information systems (GIS), spatial statistics, and disease mapping. In modern public health management, spatial epidemiology plays a critical role in identifying disease clusters, evaluating environmental risk factors, mapping vector distributions, and optimizing resource allocation. Participants will master open-source and commercial spatial analytical tools, including QGIS and R spatial packages, to process, analyze, and visualize complex health and environmental data.

The course covers essential spatial data science topics, including coordinate reference systems, geocoding, spatial autocorrelation, point pattern analysis, raster environmental modeling, space-time cluster detection, and Bayesian disease mapping. Through hands-on laboratory exercises using real-world public health datasets, participants will learn how to design interactive health maps, construct spatial risk models, and generate actionable spatial intelligence to inform evidence-based public health interventions and disease surveillance systems.
