Course Overview
This specialized training course provides economists, policy analysts, and quantitative researchers with advanced econometrics techniques tailored for spatial data analysis and geographic policy evaluation. Standard econometric models often fail when applied to spatial data due to spatial dependence, spillover effects, and spatial heterogeneity. Participants will gain comprehensive training in constructing spatial weight matrices, modeling spatial autoregressive processes, estimating spatial panel models, and conducting spatial impact evaluations to assess economic, environmental, and regional development policies.
The course covers crucial methodological domains, including spatial autoregressive (SAR) models, spatial error models (SEM), spatial Durbin models (SDM), spatial panel econometrics, spatial instrumental variables, geographically weighted regression (GWR), and spatial impact analysis. Through hands-on statistical computing workshops using R, Stata, and Python, attendees will acquire the practical skills necessary to incorporate geographical dimensions into economic modeling, evaluate regional policy interventions, and generate evidence-based policy insights.
Upon the successful completion of this Spatial Econometrics and Geographic Policy Analysis Training Course, participants will be able to:
ü Identify spatial dependence, spatial spillover effects, and spatial heterogeneity in economic and public policy datasets.
ü Construct, specify, and standardize appropriate spatial weight matrices ($W$) based on contiguity, distance, and economic interaction.
ü Estimate and interpret Spatial Autoregressive (SAR), Spatial Error (SEM), and Spatial Durbin (SDM) models using Maximum Likelihood and Instrumental Variable techniques.
ü Analyze spatial panel data models incorporating spatial fixed and random effects for longitudinal economic research.
ü Apply Geographically Weighted Regression (GWR) to examine spatially varying parameters and regional economic disparities.
ü Conduct geographic policy evaluations and counterfactual spatial impact assessments to inform evidence-based public policy formulation.
Training Methodology
The training employs a participant-centered, practical methodology designed to maximize knowledge retention and real-world application. The course is designed to be highly interactive, challenging and stimulating. It will be an instructor led training and will be delivered using a blended learning approach comprising of:
ü Interactive lectures and expert-led econometric presentations
