Course Overview
In the wake of systemic conflict or authoritarian rule, the path to lasting peace is paved with the complex mechanisms of transitional justice. This 5-day intensive course is specifically designed for human rights professionals to bridge the gap between international legal standards and the practical realities of societies in transition. Participants will explore how to balance the competing demands of justice, truth, and peace, ensuring that human rights officers can effectively advocate for victims while supporting institutional reforms that prevent the recurrence of abuses.
The curriculum provides a deep dive into the four pillars of transitional justice: criminal prosecutions, truth-seeking, reparations, and institutional reform. Beyond theory, the course examines the psychological dimensions of reconciliation and the role of memorialization in healing national traumas. Through comparative case studies and technical modules, participants will learn to design and monitor processes that are culturally sensitive, victim-centered, and gender-responsive, ultimately strengthening the rule of law in fragile environments.
Upon the successful completion of this Advanced Transitional Justice and Strategic Reconciliation Training Course for Human Rights Officers participants will be able to:
ü Critically analyze the legal and political frameworks governing transitional justice.
ü Implement victim-centered approaches in truth-seeking and reparation programs.
ü Monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of institutional reforms and vetting processes.
ü Facilitate community-led reconciliation initiatives and memorialization projects.
ü Advocate for the inclusion of gender-sensitive perspectives in all justice mechanisms.
